The Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course is also known as the Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC). There are 3 circumstances in which you would want to complete this course:

1. As a Requirement to Retain your Driver License
2. As an Option to avoid Points on your Driver License
3. To receive Insurance Discounts

1. As a Requirement to Retain your Driver License

If you have a Florida Driver License OR received a ticket in the State of Florida, you must complete this course in order to retain your Driver License if:

• You’ve had two traffic accidents in a two-year period, which resulted in property damage of more than $50.00.
OR
• You were a driver involved in a collision and were found to be at fault; and
  Someone was transported to the hospital.

2. As an Election to avoid Points on your Driver License*

If you have received a ticket for a non-criminal moving violation, you may elect to take this course in order to prevent points from being added to your Driving Record. If you complete this course as the result of a moving violation, the benefits that you will receive are as follows:

• No Points will be added to your License – No points will be added to your Driving Record. Adjudication of guilt is withheld.
• No Insurance Rate Increase – Your insurance policy cannot be cancelled and your rates cannot increase because of the violation, unless it involved a traffic accident that was your fault.
• Maintain your Safe Driver Status – If your Driver License indicated a Safe Driver Status previous to the violation, you will not lose this Safe Driver Status as a result of the violation.
• Education and Improvement– When you attend this class and complete the requirements, you will have a better understanding of safe driving habits. This education is valuable because it increases your awareness of defensive driving techniques that will improve your driving ability and may prevent you from getting into a wreck.

* You may not make this election if you have made this election any time within the previous 12 months. A person cannot make more than 5 elections in 10 years.

3. To Receive Insurance Discounts.

Many insurance companies will offer discounts to drivers who choose to complete the Basic Driver Improvement course. These discounts are solely at the discretion of the insurance company. For more information about receiving insurance discounts, please contact your insurance company.
